The Post Office Hotel
When asked of a favourite weekly haunt, Coburg locals can agree on one place, the Post Office Hotel. Nestled in the heart of Sydney Road, the restaurant and bar was revived by forth generation publican and Coburg local Dan Caneva in 2011. Dan’s reputation as a pillar of the community and his mark on the suburb are unmistakable.
With a legion of frequent and loyal Coburg residents, Post Office Hotel has something for everyone. Where reclining on the vintage Chesterfield sofas with an open fire on one side and a fine bottle of wine on the other, pulling up a bar stool with a Coburg Lager and house-made artisan pizza, or imbibing a gastronomic delicacy in the dining hall The Post Office Hotel offers a refined but unpretentious feeling of home.
With a seasonally changing menu, regulars are spoilt for choice. Highly recommended dishes are Tuna Ceviche with an Asian twist, with red pepper hot sauce and palm heart, sporting a light zest which is sure to please the palate, and for mains you can’t go past new head Chef Seamus Sercombe’s Duck two ways with locally foraged mushrooms. The robust drinks menu is also a credit to the diverse culture and demand from locals, with a long list of warm whiskies and rounded Australian wines.
What makes The Post Office Hotel truly unique is its team, akin to a tight knit family. Photos line the walls of the dining hall, much like any warm inviting family home. The dining hall is as grand as it is rustic, the high ceilings are filled with light and noise, as any buzzing Melbourne restaurant should be. While the multiple bar areas provide intimate spaces with exposed brick, and classic band art harking back to Dan’s days a band booker.
An intimate stage positioned near the bar plays host to an eclectic mix of musicians that always draw a crowd. Be sure to soak up the ambience every Thursday, Friday and Saturday night, or on a lazy Sunday afternoon.
The Post Office Hotel is unapologetically true to its roots. First opening in 1855, we believe this incarnation is the winner, and the locals who call it home agree.
